Penicuik Athletic 5, Dalkeith Thistle 3

Premier League’s Penicuik Athletic and South League leaders Dalkeith Thistle served up a very tasty friendly match at the Penicuik astroturf last Saturday in an eight goal thriller.

Thistle, who were trailing 3-0 at half time, made a better job of it in the second half with three goals against their hosts.

It was a highly competitive match and the opening exchanges were evenly contested. Athletic missed chances through Charlie Brigain and Mark Smith. Billy Bald did well to deny Kenny Fisher with an outstretched leg before Smith hit the Thistle side net in 11 minutes.

The opening counter was an own goal as a cross from Knight was deflected into his own net by Jags’ Grant Gavin. Thistle keeper James McQueen was in fine form tipping over a superb effort from Smith after he had beaten the Dalkeith offside trap. In 36 minutes it was 2-0 to Penicuik when a composed Mark Smith drilled the ball past McQueen.
