African star Benni McCarthy turns up at Whitehill Welfare

A football legend turned up at Whitehill Welfare on July 27 to watch their latest friendly match in preparation for the all new Lowland League.

The surprise visitor to Ferguson Park was the all-time South Africa top scorer Benni McCarthy, who won a Champions’ League winner’s medal with FC Porto, and also played for West Ham, Blackburn Rovers, Ajax and Celta Vigo.

He is pictured above with Whitehill fan Davie ‘Badger’ Main at last Saturday’s game.

And just in case you are wondering if the Rosewell side are looking to sign the African star, he was actually there as he’s engaged to the sister of the girlfriend of one of the players - John Hall.

McCarthy saw Whitehill Welfare continue their pre-season build up on with a good workout against Bonnyrigg Rose ‘A’ which they won 7-0 with goals from Jordan Finnie (2), Kerr Dodds (2), Andy Martin, Aaron Somerville and Andrew Kidd.
