CLIMBING: Gabriella, 10, reaches the top of her sport

Despite being only 10 years old, Gabriella Stewart, of P6B at Paradykes Primary School, Loanhead, has been competing in the 11-13 year old category for girls.

She has managed to qualify for both the Scottish Climbing Championship and the British Climbing Finals both of which will be held at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho on May 15 and June 12 respectively.

To qualify, Gabriella had to compete in three separate rounds, held in Stirling, Glasgow and Dundee.

In each round she had to climb three routes using ropes and attempt three boulder problems.

She was placed in the top three on each occasion enabling her to go forward to the Scottish and UK finals.

Gabriella will also be competing in her first international competition at Imst, Austria, on May 20.

Gabriella trains at Ratho four times a week for three hours and on two other nights completes a home training programme.

She recently returned from a week's coaching at Fontainbleau, France, where she was invited by Neil Gresham, one of the best known climbing coaches in the UK.

Neil is based in London but meets up with Gabriella for coaching sessions on a regular basis.
