Darren pipped to top award

Midlothian football hero Darren Fletcher missed the chance to be selected as Scot of the Year 2011.

The Manchester United and Scotland star was one of 17 nominees in the competition run by ScotsCare, the charity for Scots in London in need, hardship or distress.

The award winner, announced on Burns Day last week, is Ally McErlaine, the Texas guitarist who returned to gigging and recording after a life-threatening brain haemorrhage.
