One of Penicuik’s finest has been selected to carry the Queen’s Baton when arrives in Midlothian in June during its Commonwealth Relay.

Table tennis coach Tom Mackenzie (59) was nominated for the honour by Midlothian Council for his work in schools teaching children how to play the sport.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said dad-of-two Tom. When he first heard he’d been given the opportunity, he couldn’t quite believe it.

“I was nominated in December, so I knew about it already. But then all you do is complete the forms and tell them about everything and then they say you’ll hear more about it in March. I was one of the people who got one of these blank e-mails, initially. A lot of people got the blank e-mails by mistake so my immediate thought was that I hadn’t got it. Then, later on that day, I did get an e-mail to say congratulations and I would be doing it. I was really happy.”

Tom of Bravelaw Crescent, has been living in Penicuik with his wife Mary for years, having moved to Midlothian when he was just 18. He’s been playing table tennis even longer.
