A group of Newbattle High pupils have been crowned 7-a-side champions after winning the Borders Railway lunchtime football challenge.

The Borders Railway sponsored competition, part of a community partnership with the Scottish Football Association, saw 100 pupils take part in 7-a-side matches during their lunch breaks. Network Rail used this initiative to promote rail safety in the county.

Keith Wright, Scottish FA Football Development Officer for Midlothian, was delighted with the new competition for S2 pupils. He said: “Creating this competition has meant the number of pupils playing football has grown and grown. We hope that in the future even more pupils will take the opportunity to gain new skills with our trained coaches and make new friends.”
