The next generation of footballers – local schoolchildren – helped with the official opening of Newtongrange Star’s new 3G training pitch.

Pupils from Newtongrange and St Andrew’s Primary Schools “christened” the pitch with a match.

The official ribbon cutting had been performed minutes earlier by Midlothian Council’s football development officer and former Hibs player Keith Wright alongside Hearts players Jamie Walker and Jason Holt.

Newtongrange Star has been awarded a £50,000 loan to fund the upgrade of its seven-a-side pitch with a new 3G surface.

The changing rooms and showers have been upgraded.

Future plans also include refurbishment of the clubhouse, which will allow Star to offer more classes.

The 3G pitch is used by the 23-strong Star squad twice a week for training.

The new facilities have also been made available to Newtongrange Star CYP with the potential to become a training base for 140 youngsters playing for 15 seven and 11-a-side teams within the local community.
