FOOTBALL: Dalkeith Thistle made to battle

Dalkeith Thistle were made to fight every inch of the way in order to wrestle all three South Division points from Dunbar United last Saturday at King's Park, all the goals coming in the first half.

A strong wind had favoured the Seasiders for the first 45 minutes but they were troubled to exploit it, overhitting their passes too often.

With both clubs now finished with League Cup section games it was back to bread and butter games for three championship points.

It took Thistle just 15 minutes to score their first league goal of the season as a fine shot from Scott Maxwell beat United's excellent keeper John Johnstone to open the home account.

Callum Hill replied for United with a shot that hit the Dalkeith post as another chance to the Seasiders saw Graham Purves hit too high.

Then two goals in the space of a minute at either end began with a 43rd minute goal from Steven Pudledski putting Thistle 2-0 ahead only for Dunbar to reply with a smart finish from Lachie Shaw Stuart netting United's first goal of the new league season.

At 2-1 ahead at the start of the second, Dalkeith, with wind advantage, huffed and puffed while Johnstone in the visiting goals continued in fine form.

In a tight finish both sides squandered chances but at the finish Thistle just did enough to earn all three points before setting off for Fauldhouse this Saturday for their next league challenge having already been there and lost 2-1 in the League Cup.
