As Commonwealth Games fever sweeps the nation, one sporting Midlothian family has double cause for excitement.
Two generations of the Purves family took part in the Queen’s Baton Relay as it passed through the county. Grandad, Jimmy Purves, (74) carried the baton through Newtongrange, and his granddaughter Katie Purves (17) took it along Dalkeith High Street.
Jimmy has competed and coached at the highest level of Judo in Scotland for the past 60 years, running Yoshin Judo club from the age of 17.
Katie was nominated to carry the baton by her school – Dalkeith High – after a successful year both on the sports field and in the classroom.
She said: “Carrying the baton in itself would have been exciting but being able to share the experience with my grandad just made it even better. And all our family were able to watch us too.”
