RUGBY: Lasswade triumph in National Shield final
It was Murrayfield magic as Lasswade beat Greenock Wanderers 17-7 to lift the Scottish Hydro National Shield at the weekend.
Greenock Wanderers came to Murrayfield with high hopes of capping their season with the Championship and Shield double but for the second time this season met their nemesis in a defiant and disciplined Lasswade team determined to make their own mark amongst the cream of National League rugby.
Both teams were accompanied by several hundred vociferous supporters who were treated to a thrilling game of rugby in spite of the low score, with all 30 players on the pitch maintaining a furious intensity throughout the 80 minutes.
Lasswade coach, Dave Cockburn, was "incandescent with pride" when his side ran off the winners but also praised the opposition: "Greenock put us under pressure and we worked hard to starve them of possession.
"Murrayfield is an amazing place to play; it makes everything extra special and the crowd were phenomenal."
