Star shine thanks to Jamieson double

Newtongrange Star v Sauchie Juniors

Newtongrange Star v Sauchie Juniors

Top of the East Super League Newtongrange Star duly completed a league double over visiting Sauchie at New Victoria Park.

Elsewhere on Saturday, title rivals Bonnyrigg, Linlithgow and Bo’ness were all dropping points in the top title race.

The Star might have been further ahead than the single goal accomplished by Sean Jamieson first half strike but woodwork saved the visitors no fewer than three times.

Playing conditions were heavy and difficult and both teams took time to get used to it but Sauchie’s early pressure ended with a wayward Andy Munro shot.

It took 13 minutes for Star to threaten but Sean Jamieson’s pace saw him beat the offside trap only for his parting shot to hit the crossbar.

But in 18 minutes it was 1-0 to Nitten when Paul Tansey’s determined run saw him deliver into the box where top scorer Jamieson provided the correct finish for the opening strike.
