Top scorers this week are Newtongrange Star – netting their 21st goal of the season in their eighth game, and securing their first Premier League win of the season against Jeanfield Swifts.
Newtongrange bounced back in style from last week’s defeat at Dundee Violet with a superb performance at New Victoria Park on Saturday.
Spectators barely had time to blink as the goal rush started after only 14 seconds, when a superb diagonal pass from Paul Tansey found Chris King in space, and he lashed the ball home from 16 yards, giving the home side a dream start.
The Swifts tried hard to get back into the game, and they came close on 19 minutes, when Holden headed narrowly over.
However, Tansey was causing the Perth side all sorts of problems and yet another defence-splitting pass sent Ally Forster clear to lob the ball over the advancing keeper to make it 2-0 after 27 minutes.
Forster nearly made it three before half time, but his powerful header was well saved. The Star went in leading 2-0 at the break.
The second half saw both sides come close to scoring before Star sealed the points after 66 minutes’ play when Joe Dunbar crossed for Lewis Turner to volley home at the back post.
The visitors were toiling now as Star piled on the pressure, and Newtongrange’s fourth goal came on 71 minutes.
Tansey then saw a fine curling effort pushed out by goalkeeper Bruce, and then Blair Tolmie struck the crossbar from the rebound before Kevin Donnelly was on hand to smash the ball into the net from point-blank range.
Turner nearly added another before Paul Tansey got the goal he fully deserved, crashing home a fine drive from 12 yards to make it 5-0 after 78 minutes.
