With hardly time to catch their breath following the British Championships in January, Just-Judo travelled down to Walsall for the Midlands U21 Age Band Championships, a British and Scottish ranking event.
Day 1 saw new Pre-Cadet British Champion Emily Rae take to the mat in the U57 kg category. Emily produced maximum scores in all of her contests, even the final, where she defeated fellow Scot Kirstin Walker from Hibari-Kan Judo Club. Hannah Moszcynski was next up in the U52kg category but was unable to repeat her medal winning performance at the British this time around, finsihing fifth after a very closely fought event. Two of the club’s other British Champions were in action on Day 2 and although Alexander Short and Rob Hamilton finished with Silver and Bronze medals respectively they were unable to repeat their performances of last month, with Rob being edged out on penalties in the early rounds and having to come back in the repecharge to convincingly claim his bronze medal.
Bringing the weekend to a close was Eilish Walker in GB (Cadet Girls U57kg). Eilish reversed a defeat at the recent Junior British Championships to Lele Nairn from Bristol in the semi-final, following wins from maximum scores in the early rounds. That put her against current British Cadet Champion Jodie Caller from Renzoku Judo Club in the final, where she lost out in Golden Score after it was all square at the end of the contest.
With places on the GB team for the European Cadet Championships at stake the forthcoming North West Age Bands at St Helens promises to be stern test for Rob, Alexander and Eilish.
