Seventeen-year-old Charlie Carstairs of Lasswade Athletic Club created his own little piece of athletic history when he won the open 90 metres Pat Chester sprint at the famous New Year Sprint meeting at Musselburgh Racecourse.
Charlie was repeating the victory of his coach, Andrew Sobik, who won the event when it was held at Meadowbank Stadium in 1985.
A sports and recreation student at Telford College in Edinburgh, former Lasswade High School pupil Charlie lives in Newtongrange, and has been coached by Andrew Sobik for the last three years at Dalkeith Campus and Meadowbank. He is part of the Lasswade Athletic Club’s senior men’s track and field squad, and has progressed rapidly through the club rankings list.
Coming through a tough heat and semi-final Charlie, although running off 10 metres was the back marker in the final, where he also faced club mate Dolphinton’s Jordan Charters (11.5m), coached by Charlie Affleck.
