On Saturday at the Lake of Menteith, 27 year old Stuart Marklow from Penicuik won the Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship.

Stuart, who fishes for Loanhead & District AC, netted 12 trout for 26lbs 3.8ozs to narrowly beat the 2010 Champion Peter Auchterlonie who had 12 trout for 25lbs 9.6ozs.

Another Penicuik angler, Ben Robertson, was sixth with nine trout for 20lbs 7.2ozs.

This was the 123rd renewal of the Championship and was contested over a series of 10 knockout heats and six semi finals. A total of 361 anglers took part in the championship which started back in April.

Stuart and his father Derek were both in the fourth heat at the Lake of Menteith on 30th April and both qualified from there to go through to the semi finals. Stuart, who caught eight trout for 18lbs 14ozs was 24th of the 57 competitors and his father was 19th. Both Stuart and Derek went to Lintrathen Reservoir on 16th June for their semi final and while Stuart was 3rd equal of the 27 competitors with 12 trout for 19lbs 15ozs his father didn’t make the cut. This was only Stuart’s second attempt at the National Championship. 2014 was the first time that Stuart had been entered in the Championship and he also made it to the final that year and finished 58th.

Sixty-two anglers from clubs in the Borders right up to Orkney and Shetland had qualified to contest the final and with six of the last eight National Champions in the field along with eleven 2015 Scottish Internationalists it was a particularly hard final. The Championship doubles as the qualifier for the Scottish Teams that will contest the 2016 Home Country Internationals and Stuart will be in one of the teams that will be going to either Ireland or Wales.

2014 was also the first time that Ben Rob Robertson was entered in the Championship and he also made it to the final that year and finished 29th. Ben went to his heat at Menteith on 12th May and qualified in 15th out of the 54 competitors. He also went to Lintrathen on 16th June for his semi final and qualified in sixth place. Ben also qualifies for the 2016 Scottish International Teams and like his friend Stuart he will also go to either Ireland or Wales.
