In Week 27 of The Edinburgh & Lothians Table Tennis League the attention turned to the League Cup Competition in which Penicuik had an interest.

Having won the cup competition for the first time in Penicuik’s history last year, Greig McDonell, Iain Johnstone and Abby Wighton had done remarkably well to reach the semi-final stage this season but needed to defeat the current Premier Division Champions, Murrayfield 1, to reach this year’s final.

The first three matches of the night were to prove crucial to the outcome of the semi-final. In match one, Iain Johnstone faced Murrayfield’s No.1 player, Calum Morrison who had already had a remarkable season by remaining undefeated throughout the Premier League campaign.

The handicap system provided Iain with a ten-point start in games played to 21 points.
