A NEW sports facility is bringing a touch of Gallic charm to a Midlothian park.

A piste for the popular French sport of pétanque has been created in Penicuik Park, just in time for the new season.

It was made possible through £3,000 funding from Penicuik Community Sport Hub, which is supported by Midlothian Council and sportscotland.

Pétanque, similar to boules, is associated with shady town squares in France, a country that has 17 million playing the sport.

Members of the public will be able to borrow equipment from Penicuik Leisure Centre and play the game for free.
