Newbattle Community High School triumphed in the recent Lloyds TSB Scotland U-14 Boys’ Plate Final with an enthralling 5-4 victory over St Andrew’s Secondary of Glasgow at Albyn Park, Broxburn.

The first chance of the game fell to Greg Paterson of St Andrew’s, who saw his effort tipped round the post by Newbattle goalkeeper Bryan Taylor. Newbattle then came close to opening the scoring after a great solo effort by Grant Nelson went just wide of the target.

St Andrew’s opened the scoring on 15 minutes after Ryan White ran clear and coolly slotted home from 10 yards.

The Glasgow side then doubled their advantage three minutes later when Jordan Felon nodded it past the defender and rounded the keeper.

In the 25th minute play was suspended for quarter of an hour after a Newbattle player suffered a nasty arm injury and required medical attention. To compound Newbattle’s misery St Andrew’s made it three after Ross Young’s pinpoint corner was powerfully headed in by Greg Paterson.

Newbattle then managed to regroup and hit back with Kieran Somerville nodding home at the near post after an outswinging cross from the right.

Back came the strong St Andrew’s side, however, to make it 4-1 with Ryan White getting his second of the game.

A defiant Newbattle refused to be beaten and Kieran Somerville reduced the deficit to two after he pounced onto a loose ball in the St Andrew’s box and powered a shot into the roof of the net.

Newbattle now had the bit between their teeth and incredibly ended the half level after two goals in quick succession from Grant Nelson and Kieran Somerville.

There was more drama to follow towards the end of the second half. Newbattle completed an incredible comeback with three minutes to go when Grant Nelson converted a dangerous low cross from Ryan White.

Things went from bad to worse for St Andrew’s when Ryan O’Connor was red carded for a professional foul, tripping the speedy Nelson at the edge of the box.

It was an incredible end to a fantastic encounter which both sides contributed to.
