Newtongrange Silver Band with the Scottish Shield, in Perth.

Newtongrange is hitting the right notes – with the village’s silver band picking up a national award and its pipe band in line for another.

The Newtongrange Silver Band travelled to Perth Concert Hall to compete in the Scottish Challenge Shield Contest recently.

The test piece chosen by their musical direcor Lee Skipsey was Robert Redhead’s ‘Corpus Christi’.

According to the group, at the end of the stirring performance there was no doubt that Lee and the band had gelled together, producing a magnificent performance that was met by rapturous applause from the three adjudicators, as well as from the audience.

Meanwhile, Newtongrange Pipe Band is up for an award at the BBC Alba Traditional Music Awards on Saturday.

Nominated in the Best Pipe Band category, they are up against Boghall and Bathgate Pipe Band, Greater Glasgow Police Scotland and Ullapool and District Junior Pipe Band.
