Midlothian music acts have the chance via a battle of the bands competition to play in front of thousands of music fans at Dalkeith Country Park.

Interested bands and solo acts have until May 22 to enter the competition for a chance to open Midstock music festival, appearing alongside the likes of Fatherson, Fish, the Hoosiers and the Fratellis.

Midlothian Council’s education support officer for expressive arts, Jake Herriot, believes this competition provides a chance for local acts to shine.

He said: “It’s a great opportunity, especially for younger acts because there are very few events for them to play.

“At the moment the local music scene is confined to Edinburgh and bands from here have got to sell tickets just to get gigs. It’s exploitation.

“There is great talent out there as the Star talent competition showed, so this is a perfect opportunity for them.”

Midstock organiser Wullie Slight said: “The Rebel Westerns won it last year and they had a fantastic day, they must have shook my hand 20 times!

“Whoever wins this year will be treated the same as the other bands on the bill.

“So it’s a fantastic opportunity for a local act to have such a great experience.”
