Newtongrange Pipe Band has been busy holding its own at a higher grade this summer following promotion to grade B3 last year.

As well as competing at a higher level, the band has also been busy with non-competitive commitments such as gala days and playing at Newbattle Abbey College when the Queen’s Baton arrived as part of its worldwide tour.

Newtongrange Pipe Major Gary Nicholson has been happy with progress.

He said: “It’s basically a brand new pipe core that we have got this year.

“The band as a whole is getting experience in the new grade that we are in. We got promoted last year so we are finding our feet and gaining experience, it’s a big learning curve this year.

“But we are holding our own against these bands.”

The band practice every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Newtongrange Masonic Hall, 6-9pm, with learners’ practice on Mondays from 6.30-7.30pm. Call Jan Murray on 07984 591700.
