TV preview: Top ten TV shows to look forward to in 2013

Actors, writers and producers have all been hard at work over the last few months making some cracking new TV series. Here, Evening News Entertainment Editor Liam Rudden picks his Top 10 series to catch in 2013.

MR SELFRIDGE

Next month on STV, Corrie’s Katherine Kelly and Entourage star Jeremy Piven retell the 1909 opening of Selfridges. Piven is American entrepreneur Harry Selfridge and Kelly, socialite Lady Mae, who uses her connections to help build his empire.

THE FOLLOWING

THIS cat-and-mouse thriller on Sky Atlantic in January, follows the pursuit of a university professor-turned-convicted-serial-killer (James Purefoy). Escaped from prison, he’s being hunted by the FBI agent (Kevin Bacon) who originally caught him.

FORGET the BBC’s Sherlock. Elementary finds Conan Doyle’s heroes updated. In the guises of Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller, Holmes and Watson are ready to solve new cases on Sky Living this January.

YES, PRIME MINISTER

THE wait is over. The brilliant and much-lauded satire Yes, Prime Minister returns for brand new episodes on Gold, starting Tuesday, January 15 at 9pm.

WORLD WITHOUT END

THE follow up to Ken Follett’s The Pillars Of The Earth is set in the 14th century and is Channel 4’s latest gore and raunch fest this January. Charlotte Riley and Tom Weston-Jones are Caris and Merthin, a young couple forging their way against the background of the Black Death.

RUN

OLIVIA Coleman appears in this gritty new drama as Carol, a mother who suspects her sons Dean and Terry of committing a terrible crime. Due for broadcast on Channel 4 in February and March.

MARY AND MARTHA

THIS spring, BBC One will screen a TV film to promote the message malaria can be eradicated. Doesn’t sound all that promising? Ah, but knowing Richard Curtis penned the script, and that Brenda Blethyn and Oscar-winning Hilary Swank star, gives hope surely.

THE SPA

BENIDORM creator Derren Litten‘s new series is set in an ultra-modern gym and spa. Due for screening in the Spring on Sky Living, it stars The Thick Of It’s Rebecca Front, Benidorm actor Tim Healy, former EastEnder Cheryl Fergison and Litten himself. Think Brittas Empire.

TOP OF THE LAKE

LATER in the year, BBC Two heads to New Zealand, where a pregnant 12-year-old has gone missing after last being seen standing in a freezing lake. Mad Men actress Elisabeth Moss is the detective charged with solving the mystery.

REVOLUTION

THIS series will be coming to Sky1, early 2013. An epic adventure thriller from Supernatural’s Eric Kripke and JJ Abrams it’s already a huge hit in America.
