Review: ’Allo ’Allo, Spotlites @ The Merchant’s Hall

IT’S not often a Fringe theatre show merits four stars but, in this instance, Practical Magic Theatre Company’s ’Allo ’Allo bucks the trend. ****

This mash-up based on the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies episode of the 80s sitcom is a must-see for anyone who remembers Rene Artois and friends because they’re all there – brilliantly portrayed, innuendos and all.

Prepare to be transported back to Second World War France, to the liveliest little cafe in Nouvion, where Rene and wife Edith do their best to hide the two British airmen, placate the French Resistance and, of course, keep the Gestapo – headed up by Herr Flick and his beautiful protégé, Helga – at arm’s length.

You’ll be blown away by the resemblance the 20-strong cast have to the original 
line-up – not least the camp Lieutenant Gruber. In fact, you’ll cry with laughter at this brilliant portrayal of Gruber and his soft spot for the hero of the show – a promiscuous Rene who, true to form, already has his hands full with cabaret-loving wife Edith and waitresses Mimi and Michelle. This one has to be seen to be believed. It’s a Fringe phenomenon.
