The project is part of a wider UK scheme that will see over 50,000 pizza kits handed out across the country in order to fight food poverty and hunger during the school holidays.

Nadia Ahmed, the Morrisons Gyle community champion, has been at the forefront of various schemes being rolled out across the Gyle area.

Last October half term she helped to provide packed lunches to the Community One Stop Shop in Broomhouse which had seen an average of 60 children a day coming for snack packs and other services.

But it was felt that a fresh approach should be taken in order to get children thinking about cooking nutritious meals through a more interactive activity.

The One Stop Shop, said: “We are so grateful to Morrisons at the Gyle for giving us the fantastic pizza kits. Not only do the kits end up producing delicious food, but they provide families with an activity during the school holidays. Morrisons have supported our work in various ways for some time - having ongoing and reliable support puts us in a better position to help those who need it most in our community.”

As part of the community champion role, Nadia had also helped to organise a coats 4 kids appeal in partnership with a sister store on Ferry Road.

She has also undertaken a random acts of kindness campaign which involved leaving tokens such as biscuits and flowers on cars, sneaked into baskets and Amazon deliveries.

And as a company, Morrisons announced that they were going to add another £5 million to help food banks, bringing the grand total of support in the UK to £15million.

On foodbanks, Nadia said: “Food banks are under a lot of pressure just now, as the amount of families visiting them has jumped since the pandemic. Our customers are amazing when it comes to supporting food banks. We have 'Pick Up Packs' in store which contain basic items that the food banks need such as food, toiletries, cleaning and laundry items. Our store sells on average 80 a week which then gets sent to local banks and schools.”
