On Wednesday, March 24, Midlothian Provost, Councillor Peter Smaill, took part in a socially distanced sod-cutting ceremony at the Hardengreen site to officially mark the commencement of work.

Muir Construction has begun work on the 1.5 acre site for the land owners London & Scottish Developments.

The development will comprise Starbucks and Greggs drive-through outlets, as well as 46 car parking spaces.

This will create around 60 long-term retail jobs and 50 construction jobs. Muir Construction expects to complete the build phase by late August. The units will then be fitted out by the retailers and should open for business in late October or early November.

Councillor Peter Smaill (Con) said: “For many years this site has been zoned for development and I’m pleased to say that, now all the issues have been resolved, Midlothian can welcome two renowned international brands to the Hardengreen location.

“Apart from the social and consumer benefits, Midlothian will have new employment opportunities at a time when these are especially important for our bounce-back from a tough time in the jobs market. Congratulations to all who have worked hard to make this double development a reality.”

Andy Richardson, of London & Scottish, said: “We are pleased to be working with Midlothian Council and Muir Construction on the regeneration of this site, which has lain disused for many years.

“As well as creating new jobs and providing improved amenities for the local community, these outlets and their associated parking will attract business from people travelling on the main A7 route who would have otherwise by-passed Dalkeith
