The quick-thinking lad told their dad who discovered they had discovered a plastic capsule stuffed with dozens of tiny pink and green pills.

The father called Police Scotland and officers removed the pills and checked the boys were okay.

Following the scare, the concerned dad, who asked not to be named, said: “My son told me his younger brother had found ‘sweeties’ and that they were pink and green things in a tub. Your mind goes straight to the worst-case scenario and that’s exactly what it was.

“The shock of how it could have gone wrong didn't kick in till later but looking back and if could have gone very differently. Either one of our kids could have eaten a pill.

“Or another kid could have picked them up and had not had the good sense to turn them over, there are so many possibilities where this could have ended very differently. We have dodged a bullet.”

The Royal High Primary School’s parent council later urged parents to ‘stay vigilant’ – reminding families that the situation could have been “much worse”.

This message has been echoed by Edinburgh City Council.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident and the school has reminded pupils and parents to be vigilant.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers in Edinburgh received a report after a Kinder Egg with an unknown substance inside was found on Tuesday, 1 December, 2020. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The disturbing drugs discovery follows a similar incident last April when a Fife mum’s son found an identical capsule filled with tablets at Lochore Meadows in Lochgelly.

Stacey Thomson had taken her eight-year-old son Kynzli to the popular park to feed the swans during the school holidays when he found a plastic capsule from the inside of a chocolate egg.

Inside were around a dozen pale blue tablets marked with the letter V – the anti-depressant Valium.

Stacey said at the time: “I would like other parents to be more vigilant when with their children at local play areas, regardless of their age.

“Although my son would never have touched what was inside, the same cannot be said for a child of a younger age."
