Emergency services were called to the school shortly after 3.30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The school was evacuated and there are no reported injuries to staff or pupils.

It is thought the fire broke out in a ground floor classroom and spread to the roof.

The school did not have sprinklers installed.

Liberton Primary School will be closed for the rest of the week.

Edinburgh City Council will decide next week about arrangements for the return of pupils on February 17 after half-term.

Firefighters worked through the night to ensure there were no 'hotspots' or spreading of the fire.

One fire engine remains at the scene. Representatives from the Council will visit the school today to assess the damage.

Council leader Adam McVey thanked the emergency services for doing an 'absolutely outstanding job' tackling the fire.

Speaking at a Council meeting he said: “We are going to get access to the building today that will give us a better understanding of the damage.”
