Midlothian school receives royal seal of approval for coronavirus efforts
Newbattle High School has received a royal seal of approval for all of its efforts in helping fight against the coronavirus outbreak.
With most pupils forced to do their work at home since the lockdown came into force two weeks ago in an attempt to limit the spread of the deadly virus, the Mayfield school has been providing learning mostly online for its pupils, and teaching the children of key workers at Newbattle Centre.
On top of that, the school has also been using its 3D printer to create face shields for NHS and care workers. A vital tool in helping frontline workers tackle this pandemic, with many staff claiming they do not have enough protective equipment to allow them to do their jobs.
The school’s efforts led to praise on the official twitter page for The Queen and the Royal Family – @RoyalFamily – much to the delight of everyone at the school during this difficult time.
Highlighting a tweet by Newbattle High’s technologies principal teacher Mr Hay with a photo of face shields produced at the school, the Royal Family’s tweet said: “A sincere thank you to all staff @newbattlehigh who are teaching 90 per cent of classes online, distributing digital devices, providing home learning & staying open for key worker children.
“They have even begun to create face shields for NHS and care workers using their 3D printer!”
Responding to the royal seal of approval, Midlothian Council Leader Councillor Derek Milligan (Lab) was delighted with this “well deserved pat on the back”.
He said: “We are so proud of our staff across the council who are going above and beyond during the coronavirus crisis.
“The Newbattle team is just one fantastic example. The school incorporates our first Digital Centre of Excellence, which is garnering international recognition.
“It’s a real honour to find though that their brilliant work has also reached the attention of the Royal Family.
“Getting royal recognition is a well-deserved pat on the back to everyone at Newbattle.”
