Coronavirus in Scotland: 214 cases recorded in the Lothians today as total number of deaths across the country rises above 5,000

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also announced Scotland has recorded 54 deaths from coronavirus and 1,875 positive tests.

It brings the death toll under this measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 5,023.

Speaking during the Scottish Government’s daily briefing on Tuesday, Ms Sturgeon said 153,423 people have now tested positive in Scotland, up from 151,548 the previous day.

The daily test positivity rate is 12%, up from 11.5% on the previous day.

Of the new cases, 607 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 280 in Lanarkshire, 214 in Lothian, and 162 in Ayrshire and Arran.

There are 1,717 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, up 53 in 24 hours.

Of these patients, 133 are in intensive care, an increase of seven.
