Baskets for donations have now been shifted to areas where staff can keep a close eye on them.

"You may have noticed that our donation baskets have been either moved or removed in some supermarkets," reads a post on the Edinburgh Food Project Facebook page.

"Unfortunately this is due to items being taken from our basket from shoppers. They are now in a place more visible to supermarket staff to be monitored.

"Whilst we appreciate the current situation is very serious and understand the worry and uncertainty, we ask that you please consider those in need of our donations.

"Thank you to everyone who has offered there on going support."
