The 64-year-old, who shops for his elderly mother and his wife’s elderly parents there once a week, filmed the scene at about 10am on Thursday and said another queue of the same length had formed in the adjacent aisle.

He said: “There were five checkouts open and these two big long queues down the aisles and we had to leave a gap so that people could do their shopping.

“We do our shopping there every Thursday morning for our elderly parents and I’ve never seen anything like this before.

“People are just going crazy.”

Mr Carr, who lives across the road from the Aldi, says he has been in the shop every day since the weekend looking for toilet roll and paracetamol but none have been in stock.

He continued: “We have enough to keep us going but have been doing this for my wife’s 89-year-old parents and you can not afford to run out.

“They get prescriptions delivered but paracetamol is a basic product that everyone needs a pack of in their cupboard.

“Everyone keeps saying the shops don’t have problems but there are no basics like toilet rolls and paracetamol on the shelves.

“We managed to get 95 per cent of what we wanted but the fact is the queues were so long – it took 30 minutes. Folk have gone crazy.”

Mr Carr said he saw signs up near the tills this morning saying Aldi is restricting customers to buying four of the same item.

On March 14th, Aldi UK issued a statement on social media saying they would be limiting customer purchases to four units on all products to ensure everyone has an opportunity to purchase them.

Today, they also published a statement on twitter saying stores will now be closing at 8pm through the week and, in Scotland, at 6pm on Sundays.

The budget retailer has also provided advice to customers to be mindful of keeping social distance and giving space to their staff when carrying out transactions, as well as using contactless payment where possible.

Aldi has also been contacted for comment.
