John Menzies had several branches across Edinburgh, but the Princes Street store was by far the biggest. The store became synonymous as a vendor of records, toys and games, in addition to its traditional range of books, magazines and stationery and was immortalised in Danny Boyle’s 1996 film Trainspotting. Widely regarded as the best fish and chip shop in Edinburgh, Brattisani's outlets could be found all over the city. But it was the shop at Newington Road - just round the corner from the Royal Commonwealth Pool - that is the most memorable. Many a local will remember heading there as a kid for chips after a swim at the pool. Photo: Third Party
