Nostalgia: Snapshot, September 22, 1981

THREE cleaners made a new friend when they came across a “man of wood”, and were later pictured on the front page of the Evening News on this day, September 22, in 1981.

“Bill and Ben the wooden top men it isn’t,” our story said, as it revealed how “domestics” Mrs Anne Gallagher, Mrs Anne Whitson and Mrs Anita Lee found the intricately-carved man mountain outside the Queen’s Hall in Hope Park Cresent.

The sculpture was later taken inside as part of an exhibition put together by Portobello High School teacher Zigi Sapietis and his pupils.
