This festive season I gave myself a task. I decided to rank as many of the plant-based Christmas sandwiches on offer at major supermarkets. There were twists and turns (and some surprises) on the way, but here are my findings. For those vegans – and non vegans alike – if you’re in a rush and need a tasty meal deal, I’ve done the hard work for you. These are the sandwiches and wraps you should reach for, and those you should avoid like the plague.
5. ASDA
Asda's Plant Based Vegan ‘No Turkey’ Feast Wrap (£2.50) has turkey style soya pieces, stuffing and cranberry. Unfortunately this was quite bland and processed, there's not much flavour jumping out. Disappointing as Asda's Plant Based range can be really good. 2/5 Photo: GS
6. Tesco
Tesco Plant Chef ‘No Beef Wellington’ (£2.75) is wheat and pea protein, mushrooms and red wine dressing with spiced cabbage in a bar-marked tortilla. As Gregg Wallace famously said on MasterChef: "Not a beef wellington? Not going through." This is overwhelmed with spinach, dry “beef” and has an astonishing lack of moisture. Red wine where? The ‘mushroom red wine’ sauce is a buttery flavourless mess that collects at the bottom. Unseasoned, bland. 1/5 Photo: GS
7. Aldi
Aldi Plant Menu Vegan Festive Feast (£1.79) includes a parsnip fritter with vegan sage and onion mayonnaise on oatmeal and poppyseed bread. Sadly this one was very disappointing. The whole thing was overwhelmed with cranberry sauce and no other flavours came through. Might as well have a jam sandwich. 1/5 Photo: GS
