Edinburgh community Christmas initiative looks to feed 1,500 in need on Christmas Day

Edinburgh Food Social have launched an initiative to try and ease some of the strain this Christmas, as chef and organiser Steve Brown heads up the project trying to spread some Christmas cheer in providing up to 1500 free meals for those in need in the capital.

Christmas this year looks to be tougher than most for many, with budgets squeezed and anxieties running high as we head into a festive season like no other. But Edinburgh Food Social hopes to help those in need by equipping local organisations with the means and manpower to provide up to 1,500 nutritious meals to those in need on Christmas Day.

Working alongside local, grassroots organisations such as Empty Kitchens Full Hearts, Fresh Start, Gracemount Primary, The Pennywell Pantry and more, the initiative hopes to supply as many people as possible with a hearty, nutritious meal on Christmas Day.

Edinburgh Food Social have launched a Crowdfunder with a £5000 target to help the project succeed, as well as providing the opportunity for those looking to help to purchase a Christmas dinner for someone in need for just £5 on their website.

Steve Brown, professional chef and head of food education at Edinburgh Food Social said:

“Edinburgh Food Social has always looked to partner with local organisations who know the needs of their communities more than we do, so our latest Christmas project is likewise looking to put solutions in the hands of the community. We hope to be able to provide up to 1,500 free Christmas dinners using organic vegetables from East Lothian, as well as Scottish turkey and a range of locally-sourced products that are in keeping with our ethos as an organisation.”

“It’s really exciting to see the Christmas project take off so we can support young chefs, volunteer-led organisations and people in need to enjoy this Christmas as much as everyone else.”
