It is the place where generations of Leithers have celebrated football wins, fed hungry children after a swim at Waterworld, and sobered up after many a night out.

But after 30 years in the Crolla family Leith’s Mermaid fish and chip shop will close its doors on Saturday.

Owners Rita and Michael Crolla said that while the Covid-19 pandemic has not helped the situation, there were other reasons for closing.

Among them is the loss of their father Tony Crolla in April 2019, the ‘life and soul’ of the team.

The Crolla family has been running the takeaway shop for 30 years, having rented it for a period before making it their own.

“It’s been really difficult to adapt to life without our father, he definitely left some big boots to fill,” Rita Crolla, 27, told the Evening News.

“We’re tremendously grateful for the continued support from the community over the years,” she said.

In a Facebook post announcing the closure, she and her brother said the shop has been a ‘legacy’ for the local area.

“The Mermaid is a legacy for us, and for Leith itself. It was very well established even before our parents took it over, almost 30 years ago,” the siblings wrote.

“And in an ever-changing, fast-paced city, we remained one of few family run food businesses in the area.“We have grown up in The Mermaid and watched your families grow too, seeing generation after generation still using The Mermaid as their local chip shop.”

They added: “It's so sad to be saying goodbye, and until recently we never really thought of a future for us without The Mermaid…

“But this past year has taught us in the hardest way, that nothing is guaranteed.

“And although it's hard to let go, it's the right thing for us to do as a family.”
