Stories from our files

DALKEITH: Dalkeith Town Council is to become the first in the whole of Britain to organise continuous support for an underdeveloped part of the world. Provost James Quinn has in mind a “twinning” arrangement with a town in an “backward” country.

WOODBURN: The Woodburn area of Dalkeith could benefit from a £100,000 fund set up by Lothian Regional Council to help “areas of special needs”. Woodburn is the only area in Midlothian which will qualify for a share of the new fund and any projects must benefit Woodburn residents.

GOREBRIDGE: Two local heroes may receive an award after saving the life of a woman who jumped off Newmills Bridge in Dalkeith. Gorebridge men Bruce Cornwall (23) and William Szactylowicz jumped into the freezing River Esk to save the woman.
