DALKEITH: The government measures to meet the present balance of payments crisis has hit phase two and three of Dalkeith’s development plans. The town council learned this on Monday at their monthly meeting. Provost David Smith described the situation as “serious and disappointing”.


PENICUIK: Fire swept through one of the original buildings at Cowan’s Valleyfield paper mill on Friday evening, totally destroying it and everything it contained. The building, which was subject to a preservation order because of its historic interest, was at least 160 years old and part of the Old Low mill.


MIDLOTHIAN: The number of families and single people on council house waiting lists in Midlothian increased by 146 per cent during the 1980s, according to a report published by Shelter this week.
