PENICUIK: Penicuik Town Council are not prepared to take any steps to create a smokeless zone in the burgh. This was decided at a meeting of the council’s public health committee last week. They noted a shortage and the expense of smokeless fuel, and that there was no smoke nuisance in the area.


BONNYRIGG: Mineshafts discovered in two Bonnyrigg gardens are to be infilled by the district council. Last October a large hole appeared in the garden of 26 Rosewell Road and just before Christmas external stairs and paving slabs at 40 Rosewell Road showed signs of distortion.


PENICUIK: Defence secretary Dr John Reid swept into Penicuik last Friday to officially open the new £60 million accommodation development at Glencorse Barracks. The new barracks offer single occupancy en-suite rooms with double beds, satellite TV and broadband internet access.
