Business is flourishing at the Seilich meadow in East Lothian

East Lothian entrepreneur Sally Gouldstone is not one to let the grass grow under her feet when it comes to creating natural artisan cosmetics.

Centred around native wildflower meadows in the village of Pencaitland, Seilich, her sustainable Scottish beauty brand, has recently expanded to include moisturising and cleansing lotions.

As the first Wildlife Friendly certified company in the UK, the business grows and harvests plants that are carefully distilled in a traditional copper still to produce essential oils and floral waters – the precious botanical extracts that form the basis of all Seilich products.

The meadows are grown from a Scottish seed mix created by a local seed company and developed in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh to benefit pollinators throughout the year.

“All of our cosmetics are made from plants which are currently still growing in the Seilich meadow and the botanicals, harvested each year, are packed into every corner of our product range,” says Sally, who founded the business (pronounced Shay-lich) in 2018.

“We have also worked really hard to ensure that wherever possible we use natural, organic, vegan, palm-oil free, sustainably produced ingredients, of UK origin.”

The new product range includes Wild Rose and Mallow Moisturising Lotion and Wild Carrot and Sea Buckthorn Moisturising Lotion.

At £38 for 50ml, both combine floral waters with the highest quality cold pressed organic oils to produce delicately scented, rich moisturisers that are full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamins.

Sally has also added Chamomile and Wild Carrot Cleansing Lotion and a Peppermint and Chamomile Gel Cleanser to the existing handmade range of face mists and room mists.
