Alexander Neil, 25, had just been brought back to Addiewell Prison, West Lothian, by Reliance after a court appearance.

Custody officers phoned ahead to warn prison staff that he should be “treated with some care” given his behaviour during the day. Paul Beaton, prosecuting, said: “As officers began to process him he was taken to a search area where he confronted them. He required to be restrained by three members of staff, including Alan Whiteford.

“While he was being retrained, Mr Whiteford moved to take control of the accused’s arm.

“As he did so, the accused turned and bit him on his upper thigh.”

Neil, whose address was given as Addiewell Prison, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Whiteford on October 18 last year.

Jailing him for ten months, Sheriff Graeme Fleming told him: “You have a dreadful record for violence and the court must do all it can to protect prison officers from attacks such as this.”
