A 257-YEAR-OLD portrait of a Royal Scots Lieutenant who died fighting in North America – painted by the official artist to “mad” King George III – is expected to fetch up to £150,000 at auction later this month.

The 1754 painting depicts Lieutenant John Abercrombie of the Ist Foot or the Royal Regiment, known today as The Royal Scots.

It was painted in oil on canvas by the celebrated 18th century Edinburgh artist, Allan Ramsay.

Ramsay painted numerous images of George III as well as famous Scots including the philosopher David Hume and the Duke of Argyll, which was later used on Royal Bank of Scotland banknotes.

The oval masterpiece will be sold at Bonhams’ annual Scottish Sale in Edinburgh on Wednesday August 31, when it is expected to fetch £100,000 to £150,000.
