Academy boost for learners
Academies in healthcare, food science and the creative industries are to be developed in the Lothians thanks to a £4.6 million grant.
The cash, which was awarded to Queen Margaret University by the Scottish Funding Council, will see up to 1200 young people enter into specialist academy training in their chosen field of employment while still at school.
It follows the launch of the East Lothian Hospitality and Tourism Academy in August – a collaboration between Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh College and East Lothian Council – which is aimed at easing the transition from learning to working in the industry for 16 to 18-year-olds.
Now the collaborative model will be rolled out across more secondary schools in East Lothian, the Capital and Midlothian.
They are due to be running by 2014-15.
