All that jazz as Midlothian pupils perform

There’s a real treat in store for Midlothian jazz lovers this May.

One of the UK’s best-known jazz musicians, Dennis Rollins, is coming to town with his Velocity Trio for a concert in Loanhead Miners’ Welfare Club on Wednesday, May 30, at 7.30pm.

He’ll be supported on the night by the Midlothian Schools’ Big Band, which is made up of around 25 talented pupils from secondary schools across the county.

The Schools’ Big Band is supported by Midlothian Council’s instrumental music service, and the members are well used to the spotlight, having previously performed at high-profile venues including Edinburgh’s Usher Hall and at the recent Music for Youth Festival in Perth.

The pupils will raise the curtain with a series of pieces including ‘Moondance’, ‘At the Hop’ and ‘You Needed Me’.

Midlothian Council’s head of instrumental music, David McLeod, said: “We are delighted that Dennis Rollins and his Velocity Trio are coming to Loanhead as part of their UK tour. Our Big Band members are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to share the stage with one of the UK’s most highly respected jazz musicians. Tickets for this unique musical event are sure to go fast – so be sure to get yours before they all sell out.”
