Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery in Penicuik yesterday (Tuesday).

The incident happened around 1.15pm in Windsor Drive when a young man approached a 78-year-old woman, grabbed her handbag and tried to steal it.

The woman held onto her bag but was knocked to the ground. The teenager then made off towards Edinburgh Road empty handed.

He is described as slim-built, white, between 5ft 2in and 5ft 4in tall with fair hair. He was wearing a grey hooded top with blue lining and grey trousers or jogging bottoms.

Detective Sergeant Dave Reilly of Police Scotland, who is leading the investigation, said: “I am keen to speak to anyone who has information that can help us find this teenager. The woman was understandably distressed as a result of this callous act. I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has information that can help us identify him, to contact us on 101 or approach any Police Scotland officer.”
