The battle for Bonnyrigg Leisure Centre has turned nasty after councillors were accused of “pitching community groups against each other”.

Three groups have submitted formal bids to take ownership of the vacant council-owned building.

Bonnyrigg Centre Trust wishes to create a community hub, while other bids are for a fitness centre and a gymnastics club.

As the Advertiser revealed last week, Bright Sparks playgroup for children with additional support needs has also thrown its hat into the ring.

Councillor Ian Baxter (Green) is sympathetic towards the BCT proposal. He said: “SNP councillors are adopting a zero-risk approach, blind to the long-term benefits to the council.

“I am convinced that Labour councillors are actively working against the trust by pitching community groups against each other in some kind of turf war. People need to wake up to what’s going on and demand that councillors start working for them and not for vested interests.”
