The family of a mother and two-year-old boy found dead in their Bonnyrigg home have paid an emotional tribute to them.

Police discovered 29-year-old Janet Lockhart and toddler Michael at their South Chesters Lane house on December 28 after breaking the door down.

Janet’s husband Gary (32) was taken to hospital and has since been charged in connection with their deaths.

He was due to appear on a murder charge at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday (December 31).

Janet’s mother Maureen Hood, father John Hood and brother Dr John Paul Hood released the following joint statement: “We shared 29 wonderful years with our precious Janet, who was a loving daughter, sister and mother.

“She always put others before herself. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being you. We do not know how we will cope without you.

“To our Grandson Michael, you lit up our lives. Sleep tight our angel and look after each other until we all meet again.

“As a family we would like to thank all of our friends who have given us support and Police Scotland giving a special mention to our “Family Liaison officers who have been a great strength to us at this time.

“We also wish to thank our family doctor, Dr Rother for the time she has spent with us.

“We ask that the press now allow our family privacy and time to grieve for Janet and Michael.”

Postmortem examinations have been carried out, however police have refused to confirm how Janet and Michael died.
