Branding for private hire cars is approved by city licensing chiefs

PROPOSALS to allow the city’s largest private hire car firm to brand its vehicles with a logo and contact details have been granted by councillors.

Edinburgh City Private Hire said the move would improve safety and reduce the chance of members of the public getting into an unlicensed car.

Until now, private hire vehicles have only been authorised to have ‘pre-booked hires only’ displayed on the front door.

Director Kevin Woodburn said the move, which would see the firm’s name and number displayed on the rear door, would also allow drivers who commit offences to be traced more easily.

The black cab trade opposed the move, insisting larger private hire cars could be confused with their Mercedes Vito or Peugeot E7, a common alternative to the LTI Hackney cab, and authorised to carry adverts.

However, councillors approved the request after police and council officials recommended it. The move follows the approval of the introduction of one-passenger Smart Cars to the trade.
