British Raj
in the frame

An exhibition of rarely seen photographs of the British Raj was due to open at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery today.

Lucknow To Lahore: Scot Fred Bremner’s Vision of India charts the career of the commercial photographer, who left Scotland for India in 1882 and spent the next 40 years there.

The 24 images, printed from original glass negatives include fishermen on the River Indus and portraits of native aristocrats. Sheila Astante, of the gallery, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to catch a glimpse of rarely seen images of the Indian empire.”
