Concerns raised over fracking coming to Midlothian

A local MSP is ‘greatly concerned’ over a government report which includes Midlothian as a potential site for controversial shale gas exploration.

The Department for Energy and Climate Change’s recently released assessment report for onshore oil and gas highlights Scotland’s central belt, including Midlothian and East Lothian, as a potential site for shale gas extraction, commonly known as fracking.

Midlothian North MSP Colin Beattie (SNP) is worried about the potential risks of the practice: “The safety and the environmental impact of fracking is still very much disputed and I cannot see the sense in such projects setting up in the most populous area of Scotland.”
